Job Summary

As a Research Engineer, you will work in cross-discipline teams within different projects. Your everyday tasks will be to work within GKN Aerospace’s US Global Technology Center team on development of Laser Wire Directed Energy Deposition (DED) Additive Manufacturing (AM). You will take on a wide range of tasks focused on equipment operation as well as development of deposition techniques, testing plans, and industrialization while working in collaboration with technology engineers with expertise in materials, controls, machining, non-destructive evaluation/testing, and process development.

You will support development, integration and implement technical solutions and documentation compliant with all relevant customer, regulatory, and airworthiness requirements, within agreed program, schedule, and manufacturing constraints. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Operate additive manufacturing research equipment to implement new manufacturing processes into aerospace production
  • Engage with other technology development strands such as non-destructive testing, heat treatment, machining, and controls to develop AM processes.
  • Develop internal standards for operation, maintenance, and production of laser wire DED equipment  for aerostructure applications
  • Develop machine toolpaths and process control parameters using multiple engineering software tools for deposition of aerospace parts based on computer aided design models
  • Maintain robotic, laser welding, and sensor equipment to ensure consistent operation
  • Improve reliability and robustness of additive manufacturing equipment to enable production use
  • Support qualification of AM material and components for aerospace applications with both internal and external customers
  • Maintain database of all AM produced parts and test material logging toolpath, CAD files, process parameters and build logs into database
  • Responsible for identifying and planning technical aspects of AM feasibility studies and projects
  • Support Technology Readiness Level reviews towards technology implementation
  • Support monthly Program Management Review presentations
  • Develop, implement, and check technical solutions and documentation to ensure they are compliant with all relevant customer, regulatory, and airworthiness requirements, within agreed program, schedule, and manufacturing constraints.
  • Identify technical problems and apply/integrate solutions.
  • Support the creation of technical solutions against customer requirements as input to bids and proposals within assigned programs/projects.


Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field
  • 3+ years of relevant manufacturing experience:
  • Must be able to perform work subject to ITAR regulations and/or program requirements.
  • Experience with CAD and other engineering software  
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools.
