Job Summary

GKN Aerospace is reimagining air travel: going further, faster and greener! Fuelled by great people whose expertise and creativity sets the standards in our industry, we’re inspired by the opportunities to innovate and break boundaries. We’re proud to play a part in protecting the world’s democracies. And we’re committed to putting sustainability at the centre of everything we do, opening up and protecting our planet. With over 16,000 employees across 33 manufacturing sites in 12 countries we serve over 90% of the world’s aircraft and engine manufacturers. There are no limits to where you can take your career.

Material Solutions is a new business area within GKN that industrializes new manufacturing solutions with the ambition to make the aerospace industry more sustainable. By combining GKN's existing knowledge in design and manufacturing with new cutting-edge technology for additive manufacturing, we develop new solutions that require drastically less material than conventionally manufactured aircraft engine components. With the same capability, we design lighter and more functional products with the aim of reducing the climate impact of aviation.

Job Description

GKN’s successful industrialization of Directed Energy Deposition (DED) and Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) has created significant opportunities to expand the application of additive manufacturing across a broader range of products and customers. As demand continues to grow, we are expanding our team and invite you to be part of this exciting journey.

As Materials Engineer within Material Solutions, you will play a key role in ensuring that our additively manufactured materials meet customer and regulatory requirements. Acting as the focal point for material verification activities within assigned projects, you will work closely with customers and internal stakeholders to understand their requirements and define appropriate material verification and testing plans. You will perform, drive and coordinate these activities throughout project execution, taking ownership of delivery against agreed scope, timing, and quality targets.

Working in cross functional teams, you will report to a Project Manager and collaborate closely with Material Application Engineers, Method Specialists, and Material Laboratory Engineers to ensure successful project deliveries. Leveraging your expertise in additive manufacturing, material behavior, microstructures, and defect mechanisms, you will also support Process Verification Engineers in defining and reviewing process verification plans, and cut-up plans for new products manufactured by additive manufacturing processes.

Beyond project execution, you will contribute to the continuous evaluation of material acceptance data generated from serial production within GKN Material Solutions. These evaluations provide valuable insights into the effects of process variations, machine-to-machine differences, raw material characteristics, and other variables influencing material properties. Through this work, you will develop confidence and understanding in the robustness, repeatability and capability of GKN’s additive manufacturing processes, strengthening your ability to make informed engineering decisions and effectively provide technical guidance to customers and colleagues.
