Job Summary

Following general or detailed instructions, concept sketches, tool design drawings, standard and developmental practices and methods apply knowledge of composite tool and die design and construction. Handbook formulas and standard layout procedures are utilized in the analysis, interpretation and application of setups and the operation of machine tools. May be assigned to work independently, referring very unusual technical problems to supervision or engineering.

Job Responsibilities

▪ Cut, shape, trim blanks or blocks to specified lengths or shapes, using power saws, power shears, rules, and hand tools.
▪ Fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools.
▪ Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects by using touch, visible and precision measuring tools.
▪ Assemble or repair tools using welding methods such as MIG, TIG, stick and torch braising.
▪ File, grind, shim, and adjust different parts to properly fit them together using machine tools and hand tools
▪ Heat-treat metal tools using some form of heat generation including ovens or torch.
▪ Lift, position, and secure machined parts of surface plates or work table, using hoists, vises, v-blocks or angle plates
▪ Measure, mark, and scribe metal or plastic stock to lay out machining, using instruments such as protractors, micrometers, scribes, or rulers.
▪ Set up and operate drill presses to drill and tap holes in parts for assembly.
▪ Smooth and polish flat and contoured surfaces of parts or tools, using scrapers, abrasive stones, files, emery cloths, or power grinders.
▪ Cut, bend or shape metals using oxy acetylene torch.
▪ Fabricate shop aids and/or tools for production use by forming resins and fiber materials with blueprints and/or molds.

Job Qualifications

 

  • 2 to 5 years of direct and progressive experience with manual and computer controlled (CNC) machining equipment is required.
  • High School diploma or equivalent plus 1 to 2 years of machine tool training is required. 
  • Basic computer literacy and experience with 5 Axis (CNC) machinery is desired.
  • Must be willing to work as a team player, as well as independently.
