Job Summary

As a Tooling Manufacturing Engineer, you will be based at our Luton site supporting our Defence and Civil business lines whilst reporting to the Head of ME, the incumbent will need to be flexible to travel nationally to suppliers on an annual basis and there is flexibility to work from home for up to 1 day per week dependent on the needs of the business. The Tooling Manufacturing Engineer will support operational and development programmes to enable and deliver zero defect enabling tooling solutions whilst assuming accountability for delivering robust and capable manufacturing processes through the design, development and introduction of tooling solutions for part fabrication and assembly.

Established in 1993, GKN Aerospace in Luton is a world leader in commercial and military ice protection systems and transparencies. Offering a full range of capabilities; design, analysis, testing, certification and manufacture of electro-thermal ice protection, military fast jet canopies and flight deck windows to over 20 programmes including: Boeing 787, Dreamliner, Airbus A320, AgustaWestland, AW101, Eurofighter Typhoon and Lockheed, Martin F-22 Raptor. Our customers include Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed Martin, Bell Helicopters, Textron, BAE Systems, Pratt & Whitney, Leonardo. Our Luton site is home to 400+ employees and onsite facilities including onsite parking, canteen, vending machines and showers.

Job Responsibilities

  • Exemplify a safety-first mind-set ensuring compliance with the GKN Aerospace Health, Safety and Environmental policies and standards
  • Develop tooling solutions to complex problems
  • Support manufacturing development and integration for production
  • Resolve issues pertaining to tooling vendor schedule and/or quality
  • Utilise root cause analysis, preventative and corrective action to reduce/eliminate non-conformances
  • Implement tooling from original concept through to production
  • Design tooling for high degree of process capability utilising the GKN standard Zero Defect Manufacturing (ZDM) tool suite
  • Conduct tooling development, tool fabrication quotes, tooling input for new product quotes, tooling configuration changes that involve cost estimation, schedule coordination, and implementation
  • Deliver measurable metrics driven results in line with operational and programme goals 
  • Maintain positive team relationships with internal and external customers as well as co-workers
  • Continuously improve production processes by implementing Lean initiatives

How You'll Contribute

To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:

Essential:

  • Significant Tooling Engineering experience gained from a manufacturing environment
  • Experience of managing new product and process introduction (industrialisation) 
  • Experience of existing production process improvements
  • Experience of quality system models such as ISO9000, AS9100, or D1-9000
     


Desirable:

  • A BSc Degree or equivalent in Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical)
  • Project or programme management experience 
  • Experience of AS9145 APQP process or equivalent
  • Experience of LEAN processes and practices
  • Experience gained from a global organisation
