Job Summary

The Quality Management Systems/QMS Engineer will be based at our Luton site supporting our Defence & Civil business lines in this 2 year fixed term contract, the role will require flexibility for quarterly UK & EU site visits and the incumbent will have flexible to work from home for up to 1 day per week dependent on the needs of the business. The Quality Management Systems/QMS Engineer will review the QMS/BMS and provide core support to the site leadership team in achieving a compliant and effective system in-line with regulatory, customer & company global requirements.

Established in 1993, GKN Aerospace in Luton is a world leader in commercial and military ice protection systems and transparencies. Offering a full range of capabilities; design, analysis, testing, certification and manufacture of electro-thermal ice protection, military fast jet canopies and flight deck windows to over 20 programmes including: Boeing 787, Dreamliner, Airbus A320, AgustaWestland, AW101, Eurofighter Typhoon and Lockheed, Martin F-22 Raptor. Our customers include Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed Martin, Bell Helicopters, Textron, BAE Systems, Pratt & Whitney, Leonardo. Our Luton site is home to 400+ employees and onsite facilities including onsite parking, canteen, vending machines and showers.

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain and improve the local QMS/BMS ensuring the QMS/BMS fulfils the requirements of the industry standards, applicable Aviation Safety laws, customer and company global standards requirements
  • Work with the Quality Systems Regulatory Knowledge & Compliance Lead and Local Business Process Implementer (LBPI) for the compliance, effectiveness and efficient coherence of the local QMS and integration (BMS) with other Management Systems such as the Safety Management System, Health & Safety (ISO 45001), Environmental (ISO 14001), Energy Management (ISO 50001) and Information Security (ISO 27001)
  • Business partner Local Business Process Managers (LBPM) and associated stakeholders for the definition, deployment, and maintenance of the documented information of the local QMS/BMS
  • Manage the change control procedures including impact assessments and recommendations against business objectives, global standards, regulatory standard amendments and coordination of governance reviews for any changes
  • Recommend to LBPI and the Site Quality Systems Manager of any assurance activities deemed necessary in support of QMS/BMS activities e.g. risk assessments, change implementation planning, training, verification and post deployment of significant document/administration changes
  • Provide general QMS/BMS administration support to Site Quality Systems Manager as defined at a local level, typically support to the management of key QMS/BMS meetings, QS induction / training activities, customer/3rd party meeting/audit preparation/hosting and follow-up 
  • Provide functional support for Quality Management and Information applications
  • Facilitate QMS/BMS Change/Training supporting workshop and QMS/BMS continuous improvement activities
  • Act as internal auditor and/or provide support for audit planning, auditing and audit follow up
  • Gather and analyse intelligence and data in support of management review enabling assessment of the QMS/BMS suitability and effectiveness, associated risks and opportunities and need for change/improvement
  • Evaluate business processes for the purpose of assessing effectiveness, driving efficiency and quality improvements
  • Support the conduct of quality/compliance investigations to establish root causes and assist other LBPI areas with corrective action

  • Significant experience gained from a Quality Systems role
  • Notable experience gained from a manufacturing environment
  • Experience of working to ISO 9001 
  • Experience of Quality Management and Information applications
  • Competency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint


  • Experience of working to AS9100 requirements 
  • Experience of working to CAA Part 21G and/or CAA Part 145 regulations
  • Internal or Lead Auditor experience  
  • Experience of developing SharePoint
