Job Summary

This Legal Counsel will be the primary legal advisor on all labor and employment as well as Environment Health and Safety (EHS) for all U.S. operations and facilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide federal and state specific legal advice to Human Resources (HR) and site leadership on appropriate policies and practices for dealing with Labor and Employment matters.
  • Assist in implementing appropriate procedures to comply with all laws and regulatory requirements including those for federal contractors (where applicable).
  • Provide legal advice to EHS on best practices and manage any legal or regulatory proceedings in this area. 
  • Manage outside counsel judiciously as subject matter experts on state or regulatory specific matters. 
  • Manage outside counsel on legal and regulatory hearings in these areas of law to work towards the best overall and long-term outcome for GKN Aerospace. 
  • Advise GKN Aerospace and lead with respect to its Labor and Employment or EHS related claims and disputes. 
  • Undertake any corporate strategic projects as requested by the GKN Aerospace Senior Counsel – Civil and Defense Airframe and provide valuable counsel to the GKN Aerospace U.S. senior leadership team. 
  • Support GKN Aerospace’s compliance programs, including the provision of training and implementation of policies and procedures. 
  • Support GKN Aerospace operational and manufacturing leads on other material legal matters (including on health and safety, property and environmental matters, HR matters, ensuring employment contracts are fit for purpose and in relation to employment disputes and employee compliance and Union matters).
  • Support the Senior Counsel in the deployment of initiatives such as training, self-help and risk management tools in support of the Aerospace strategy to carefully manage risk.
  • Create tools and advise on policies that are responsive to the needs of the HR and EHS departments. 
  • Keep the Senior Counsel apprised of material matters so that there is adequate insight to the material matters.
  • Coordinate with the other GKN Aerospace legal team members.
  • Develop GKN Aerospace specific know how and understand internal dynamics that allow you to provide better legal advice.
  • Ensure the businesses are complying with the GKN Aerospace Delegation of Authority.

Job Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as a labor and employment lawyer, including litigation experience, required. 
  • Must be a currently a U.S.-licensed attorney.
  • Must be able to travel or work remotely up to 50% in the first year in order to visit all US sites with less than 25% travel requirements thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licenses and/or legal experience in multiple U.S. jurisdictions, particularly California, preferred.
  • Experience dealing with represented labor groups.
  • Experience with legal software (Practical Law and CounselLink).
  • Presentation and training experience.
  • IT skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • The ability to win the confidence of key individuals through a pragmatic approach, offering innovative ideas and solutions - able to win people over, rather than directing people what to do.
  • Good negotiating skills with the ability to identify the main value and risk issues and to resolve them effectively in line with the business case.
  • Proven ability to provide clear, practical guidance offering innovative ideas and solutions.
  • Ability to communicate legal advice across a multi-national organization, to build strong internal and external relationships and to establish oneself as a key member of the legal team.
  • Good judgment and ability to steer the business in the right direction form a risk perspective.
  • Ability and desire to learn and expand as a well-rounded in-house legal advisor.
