Job Summary

 

The Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Engineer – Manufacturing, will provide the Manufacturing Engineering organization with NDT leadership and capability to enable Operational and Developmental programs deliver zero defect products utilizing engineering and problem solving skills. The NDT engineer will be accountable for developing and delivering mature, robust and capable NDT and associated process technologies for the Manufacturing organization as they apply, to parts, parts repairs, parts fabrication and assemblies.

10-25% travel may be required for this role.

Job Responsibilities

 

•    Exemplifying a safety-first mind-set and ensuring compliance with the GKN Aerospace Health, Safety and Environmental policies and standards.
•    Responsible for the development of technical solutions to complex problems within GKN Aerospace, and for our customers and suppliers.
•    Deliver NDT technical support to be used in manufacturing process development and integration for production. This will include developing the needed NDT process standards, part/feature specific NDT methods and technique sheets, carrying out probability of defect detection (POD) studies with quantitative results that are benchmarked against industry results for the specific NDT technique for use by Engineering and by Quality.
•    Specify equipment and establish acceptance testing requirements.
•    Maintain positive, team relationships with internal and external customers, as well as co-workers
•    Continuously improve production processes by implementing Lean initiatives as regards to NDT.
    Deploy these processes with a high degree of process capability utilizing the GKN standard Zero Defect Manufacturing (ZDM) tool suite to demonstrate as such. 
    Responsible for technical support of NDT development and integration with production.  Resolve issues pertaining to vendor quality.
    Provide specialist knowledge to NDT activities with the ultimate goal of improving efficiency, product quality and the reduction of non-conforming parts.

Job Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications:


•    Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
•    Previously held or certifiable to Level 3 NDT per ASNT in at least one NDT method: LFEC/HFEC, UT, FPI, XRAY, CT (eddy current, ultrasonic, penetrant inspection, radiograpgy inspection, industrial computed tomography)
•    6+ Years of experience in a Manufacturing or Maintenance/Repair/Overhaul organization within the aerospace industry 
•    Must be able to perform work subject to ITAR/EAR regulations and/or program requirements.  

 

Preferred Qualifications:


•    Graduate degree (MS) with a focus in NDT
•    Aeropspace industry experience especially experience in an MRO organization
•    Ability to apply engineering and statistical knowledge, concepts, methods and principles to assist in the development of new NDT technologies and techniques
•    Ability to set-up, observe, record and analytically conclude from POD studies and data sets the defect/flaw size that will be detected to desired probabilities and confidence levels; recognize and mitigate the inherent uncertainitess and limitations in NDT methods.
•    Ability to take developed technologies such as CT scanning, AI based automated defect recognition, resonance techniques, thermal imaging, tera herz imaging, acousto-ultrasonics etc., and working closely with Engineering, industrialize into production environments
•    Develop, write, and maintain technical reports, internal standards and processes
•    Working knowledge of quality system models such as ISO9000, AS9100, or D1-9000
•    Identifies and anticipates technical problems and offers solutions
•    Drives to complete the job on time and continually searches for better ways of doing things
•    Understands situations by analysing them logically and uses information in a systematic way identifying appropriate course of action for resolution. 
•    Competent member of the technical community with a good understanding of other disciplines
•    Acts without supervision in own area whilst able to supervise others. 
•    Applies knowledge and skills to a range of activities
•    Understands the formal and informal structure of the business
•    Provides support to the technical community and show commercial awareness at local level
