Job Summary


The Manufacturing Engineer – Additive Manufacturing (DED), will provide the Manufacturing Engineering organization with AM process leadership and capability to enable Operational and Developmental programs deliver zero defect products utilizing engineering and problem solving skills. You will be accountable for developing Additive Manufacturing (Directed Energy Deposition) technologies to support next generation aerospace component repairs, including industrialization of robust and capable DED- and associated process technologies. 

10-25% travel may be required for this role.

Job Responsibilities


•    Exemplifying a safety-first mind-set and ensuring compliance with the GKN Aerospace Health, Safety and Environmental policies and standards.
•    Responsible for the development of technical solutions to complex problems within GKN Aerospace, and for our customers and suppliers.
•    Deliver AM technical support to be used in manufacturing process development and integration for production. This will include specifying and selecting equipment, facility planning and overseeing installation, calibration and qualification activities. 
•    Develops required process standards and operating procedures for specific parts and specific features
•    Responsible for in-situ monitoring of process defects, process NDT and quality control 
•    Responsible for specifying, receiving, storing, handling and disposing feedstock in a safe and compliant manner. 
•    Responsible for interfacing with Tooling department and ensuring appropriate fixtures are designed and deployed for use in production    
•    Co-responsible for DED equipment maintenance and safe operations 
•    Training and certification of new operators  
•    Maintain positive, team relationships with internal and external customers, as well as co-workers
•    Continuously improve production processes by implementing Lean initiatives as regards to the DED process.
    Deploy these processes with a high degree of process capability utilizing the GKN standard Zero Defect Manufacturing (ZDM) tool suite to demonstrate as such. 
    Responsible for technical support of DED development and integration with production.  Resolve issues pertaining to vendor quality for feedstock and other consumables.
    Provide specialist knowledge to DED activities with the ultimate goal of improving efficiency, product quality and the reduction of non-conforming parts.

Job Qualifications


Required Qualifications:

•    Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
•    4+ Years of experience with DED Additive Manufacturing and supporting technologies such as NDT, Heat Treatment, CNC machining     
•    Must be able to perform work subject to ITAR/EAR regulations and/or program requirements.  


Preferred Qualifications:

•    Graduate degree with a research focus on DED and allied AM modalities   
•    2+ Years of Aerospace industry / MRO experience
•    Ability to apply engineering and statistical knowledge, concepts, methods and principles to assist in the development of new AM technologies and techniques
•    Develop, write, and maintain technical reports, internal standards and processes
•    Experience working with reactive alloys, especially AM powder feedstock 
•    Certified Laser Safety Officer
•    Experience in drafting/modeling software (NX), along with excellent skills with Microsoft office products, especially Excel, and Power Point.
•    Willing to operate automation cell with laser equipment and overhead cranes.
•    Welding experience is preferred 
•    Working knowledge of industry standards in AM and welding such as AMS, AWS, ASTM etc. 
•    Knowledge of mechanical testing methods and metallurgical evaluation
•    Working knowledge of quality system models such as ISO9000, AS9100, or D1-9000
•    Identifies and anticipates technical problems and offers solutions
•    Drives to complete the job on time and continually searches for better ways of doing things
•    Understands situations by analysing them logically and uses information in a systematic way identifying appropriate course of action for resolution. 
•    Competent member of the technical community with a good understanding of other disciplines
•    Acts without supervision in own area whilst able to supervise others. 
•    Applies knowledge and skills to a range of activities
•    Understands the formal and informal structure of the business
•    Provides support to the technical community and shows commercial awareness at local level
