Job Summary

An opportunity has arisen to join the team at our Cowes faciltiy as a Principal Manufacturing Engineer. You will provide technical expertise at a site and program level for operational and development Programs to enable and deliver zero defect projects utilizing engineering and problem solving skills. Accountable for delivering robust, capable manufacturing process technology as it applies to materials, tooling, part fabrication and assembly.

Job Responsibilities

  • Exemplifying a safety-first mind-set and ensuring compliance with the GKN Aerospace Health, Safety and Environmental policies and standards.
  • Technical expertise at a site and programme level in governance and deployment of manufacturing development and integration for production within GKN Aerospace.  
  • Provides technical expertise to rapidly solve issues pertaining to vendor schedule and/or quality.
  • Breaks down technical problems, risk, opportunities, in the correct order to create products and add value to GKN Aerospace through creating Zero Defects
  • Leads positive, team relationships with internal and external customers, as well as co-workers
  • Continuously improve production processes by implementing Lean initiatives.


Sub Function Specific

  • Industrial Engineering
  • Provide Site and programme technical oversight for industrial engineering support of manufacturing process development and integration for production through:
  • Implement the global business process for industrial layout solutions, from original concept through to production. Design these processes implementing lean tools and methods in accordance with the GKN standard lean tool suite.    
  • Technical approval for new product quotes and manufacturing system change proposals
  • Manage industrialization projects, leading both internal and external (vendor) resources 

Job Qualifications



  • Technical expertise in Manufacturing Engineering, with a professional qualification / background (university degree) in engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical). Additionally:
  • A recognised authority in the field and source of information for others
  • Capable of taking a strategic view
  • Operates with minimal supervision in a complex environment, demonstrates detailed knowledge in aerospace programs
  • Makes presentations at a senior level internally and externally demonstrating ability to clearly communicate to audience
  • Identifies, anticipates technical problems and customers’ requirements offering solutions and applying them
  • Identifies opportunities to drive the business forward
  • Ability to interpret data, events and looks for appropriate solutions
  • Understands and uses information in a systematic way demonstrating independent expert technical judgement

  • For internal candidates, they must be a certified Zero Defect Practitioner and 6σ Green Belt. External candidates to demonstrate equivalent capability in problem solving and process control
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Detailed knowledge of quality system models such as ISO9000, AS9100, or D1-9000
  • Fluent in English language, both written and spoken


  • Project / Program Management
  • Familiarity with AS9145 APQP process or equivalent

Travel requirements

  • Prepared to travel domestically and occasionally internationally; Expected travel <5% of year.
