Job Summary

We are looking for a Technology Director with a strong background in organic and inorganic coating materials and application processes preferably gained within the aerospace industry. You will be accountable for; all coatings development in line with the TRL process, coatings qualification in line with the respective governing bodies’ standards and you will support the industrialisation of GKN Aerospace’s Special Coatings portfolio. 
You will have a focus on supporting the respective Business Line requirements;  integrating the requirements from operations and business Lines strategies through the Commercial Excellence Process  to ensure GKN Aerospace technologies deliver differentiation within the business.
The role will  report directly to the Civil Airframes Snr VP Engineering & Technology,  

Job Responsibilities

  • Working with internal and external stakeholders to generate GKN Aerospace technology roadmaps to establish technology development plans that support the delivery of the product strategy at business level
  • To identify and enable vehicles in which to deliver the technology development plans in the form of technology development programmes
  • Execute the delivery of the Technology development Programmes, through a programme management and technical delivery function  Define Work Breakdown Structures, develop budgets and secure geared funding opportunities from the respective eco Systems
  • Work with Product Groups (Commercial Excellence link)  to support and develop customer interaction and generate confidence for emerging technical solutions
  • Drive development of novel technical solutions improving cost and quality capability of GKNs principal and emerging revenue streams through to TRL6 ensuring coordination and hand off through to full scale production
  • Drive technology insertion into the operating businesses and programmes to maximise the TRL4+ opportunities in improving operational profitability and new business capture
  • Collaborate in technology programmes across GKN Business Lines to combine technical solutions and enhance overall product capability to the customer. 
  • Ensure delivery of all GKN Aerospace technology projects within budget and agreed milestone objectives including technical governance through the TRL model and measurable value contribution
  • Foster culture of innovation across special products technology teams achieving IDF targets and pushing forward to patent filing where appropriate to support the commercial revenue strategy
  • Represent GKN on industry and government working groups
  • Develop appropriate partnerships externally to provide a technology development ecosystem addressing technology development at all levels of maturity
  • Manage all Intellectual property related tasks i.e. protection of IP and secure freedom to operate for GKN Aerospace Engine system 

Job Qualifications

  • Degree-qualified or higher engineer with significant industrial experience.
  • The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a proven track record of leadership skills with evidence of successful delivery of projects within a distributed, large, multi-functional engineering and technology organisation preferably within an Aerospace environment.
  • The capability of the individual will extend to describing the future state of manufacturing using Industry 4.0 and adapting standards.  Knowledge and prior responsibility for certification and associated technical authorities. 
  • Experience managing project and department budgets including evidence of budget definition and successful budget control.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership, collaboration, project management, problem-solving, change management and influencing skills.  
  • Competent and well-practiced leading teams within a global matrix with virtual team relationships. 
  • Experience serving as a technical advisor to a senior leadership team


  • Has experience in developing and industrializing external inorganic and organic coatings in the aerospace sector.
