The Opportunity

Our Western Approach site is an International Centre Of Excellence in composite wing structure design and production.We manufacture composite wing spars and Fixed Trailing Edge assemblies for some of the world's most popular aircraft. Our new Tooling Technician will provide specialist tooling support, including repair, maintenance, modifications and design improvements for all jigs, fixtures and lifting media associated with the production of composite spars, major assemblies and the transportation to the customer. This is a physically demanding role, which will see you participate in a range of activities to support our manufacturing team. 

How You'll Contribute

In this busy and varied role, you will:

  • Help to plan and implement a tooling maintenance culture across all value streams
  • Manage and control the ordering of tooling parts for the maintenance, refurbishment and/or modifying of existing tools and fixtures
  • Manage Manufacturing Engineering (ME) Quality requests to support the shop floor and the wider ME community
  • Be responsible for creating practical tooling solutions to eliminate build issues and repeat failures.
  • Manage and control tool design and manufacture activities with the suppliers, ensuring on budget, on time delivery of tooling components.
  • Engage in the creation of concepts and designs for tools and fixtures in support of improvements and modifications.
  • Work as part of a fast-paced engineering team taking part in Design Failure Mode Effect & Analysis (DFMEAs), Potential Failure Mode Effect & Analysis (PFMEAs), and other risk management events.
  • Provide technical support to the metrology team as requested for any tool manufacture and assembly issues within the production areas.
  • Control minor tooling requests, record all tooling data movements between GKN, tooling supply base and Customer.
  • Investigate process improvements, aid and complete tool design with initial concepts to capture tooling requirements
  • The role requires strict attention to the compliance with all health & safety regulations and GKN Western Approach Tooling Quality procedures.

What You'll Bring

To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and expertise/ talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:
•    Formal training (or an apprenticeship) in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience with relevant knowledge of tool manufacture
•    Experience with metrology equipment and practices
•    Practical experience using CAD systems to view and print drawings.
•    Must have previous experience with Microsoft Office i.e. Word and Excel
•    Awareness of quality system models such as ISO9000, AS9100, or D1-9000
