We are looking for a Senior Engineer with a strong background in fuel cell (Cells & Stacks) to help shape the future of flight.  You will be responsible for the design and development of cells and stacks for fuel cells with a focus upon lightweight structures, fault tolerance and resilience. You will ensure integration of the stacks with the balance of plant and further investigate the potential for high temperature PEMFE cells/stacks.

The Senior Research Engineer shall draw on their diverse engineering background and product lifecycle awareness to progress a variety of research activity in the TRL1-6 range. They must have sound experience in leading technical work, including budgeting, schedule and risk management. They shall be capable of achieving through others internally and externally, and will be committed to development of their own skills and professional network. Their good communication skills shall enable them to confidently engage with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities

     Shall design and develop PEMFC Cells and Stacks (including sealing systems) ensuring compliance to requirements on mass, reliability and resilience using broad engineering expertise, including chemical, mechanical, electrical, systems, software, and process design.
     Shall be responsible for the specification and selection of MEA components and development of high temperature PEMFC technologies including manufacturing methods.  
     Shall develop stacks and components to ARP4754, ARP4761, DO160 and others as appropriate.  From requirements definition, design development, simulation, test and compliance demonstration.
     Shall develop stacks, including light weighting, cooling/sensing components and strategies and control transfer functions working closely with the Fuel Cell Systems Engineer on bounding conditions.
     Shall perform trade studies and design trade-offs at cell and stack level and support trade-offs with the Fuel Cell System Engineer at BoP level to ensure an optimized system.
     Shall develop specification documents and procedures for new products before launched into manufacturing.  Ensure their specification and ensure the production, compliance and test of the components, items and systems.  Develop validation test methods and protocols. Use DOE and Aerospace best practices.  Participate in in-depth analysis of test data.
     Shall generate technical reports and presentations, with the ability to present information in a clear and organized manner.
     Shall work closely with research institutes on the development of high temperature PEMFC technologies.
     Shall develop a roadmap for cells, stacks and associated sensing systems.
     Shall support Team Lead in the delivery of tasks, monitoring and reporting on delivery
     Shall ensure configuration management is in place for the systems and all of its components from requirement through to operation.
     Shall ensure EHS policy and process adherence for their activities, and will contribute to a proactive EHS culture in the wider team. 
     Shall contribute to the development of GKN as a 'Great Place to Work', aligned with the core principles - safe, innovative, open & honest, care & respect, and ownership.
     May support project stakeholder management with internal/external customers, and may lead management of supply chain partners in some cases.
 

Job Qualifications

Essential Specific Technical Experience :
     Experience developing integrated systems for heavy duty mobility (aerospace, maritime, rail, automotive). 
     Experience in developing Cells including MEA (membrane, catalyst & GDL) and stacks including bipolar plates and gaskets.
     Excellent understanding of manufacturing methods including for metallic and non-metallic plates.
     Experience in developing and substantiating FMEA and FTA.
     Proficiency in Multi-physics Simulation, e.g. COMSOL, ANSYS or other.
     Experience in Modelling/Simulation packages, e.g. MATLAB, Simulink, GT-SUITE or other.
     Ability to design and set-up electrical and mechanical test fixtures for testing.
     Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
     “Hands on” experience is required.
Essential General Experience:
     Has good interpersonal and communication skills, and can translate to a variety of audiences. Is confident and able to represent their project(s) and GKN values in internal/external review meetings. 
     Has experience engaging with production teams, can identify operational requirements and incorporate in the project(s) as appropriate.
     Has a good general aerospace engineering/technology knowledge base and can demonstrate strategic thinking
     Has a logical and methodical approach to work package planning and costing
     Is a strong self-starter, competent to work with general goal-based direction as well as more specific task-based requirements
     Has a growing network in Aerospace or Technology areas relevant to the role, and is able to identify and engage in the development of collaboration opportunities


Qualifications Required: 
     Bachelor degree in Chemistry, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
     Minimum 5 years experience in a electromechanical systems design and testing environment.
