Job Summary

The Senior IP Counsel can be fully remote or be based at any of our UK sites including Bristol, Solihull, Isle of White, Luton or Portsmouth in this global role supporting all three of our business lines (Civil, Defence and Engines), flexibility for monthly travel to one of our Bristol sites and annual national and international travel for team meetings and conferences will be required. The incumbent will report to the Head of Legal for Engines and assume line management responsibility for two direct reports whilst providing legal advice and support on intellectual property matters affecting GKN Aerospace across all divisions/business lines including leading on the negotiation of technology development agreements with third parties and supporting other lawyers on the intellectual property aspects of other commercial agreements.  The Senior IP Counsel will be responsible for coordinating and supporting the activities of GKN Aerospace to obtain and manage intellectual property rights to protect GKN Aerospace’s investment in technology including the mitigation of third party intellectual property risks.

Job Responsibilities

  • Negotiate agreements relating to the creation, development, ownership and licensing of intellectual property including
  • Lead negotiations of agreements for multiparty development projects particularly those where a proportion of funding is provided by third party funders (e.g. national governments)
  • Lead negotiations of other technology development contracts with third parties
  • Support in the negotiation of commercial agreements with third parties (in relation to IP provisions)
  • Support the business on non-disclosure agreements required in relation to technology development matters
  • Provide legal support in relation to GKN Aerospace’s technology eco-system including the relationship with academia 
  • Lead negotiation of any licences of intellectual property involving GKN Aerospace
  • Support on the intellectual property aspects of any M&A transactions
  • Advise on the resolution of disputes relating to IP matters and on the management of any IP related litigation
  • Support the scope of protection offered by GKN Aerospace’s IP rights and the relevance of any third party intellectual property rights to the activities of GKN Aerospace
  • Advise on the management of GKN Aerospace’s trade mark portfolio including working with counterparts in other GKN businesses in relation to “group” trade marks
  • Manage the portfolio of registered rights held by GKN Aerospace including working closely with IP managers to determine policies and procedures to be implemented
  • Provide guidance and support to the IP Managers in the divisions/business lines on specific matters
  • Support the development and implementation of specific IP strategies for relevant technologies/business activities
  • Oversee the use of IP search and portfolio management tools
  • Manage the budget for intellectual property matters
  • Provide advice and support to business colleagues on ad hoc intellectual property matters
  • Provide strategic advice and input on intellectual property matters to support the technical and business objectives of GKN Aerospace
  • Determine requirements and deliver training and education on intellectual property matters to better mitigate third party risks and to raise the profile of intellectual property within GKN Aerospace
  • Work frequently with other members of the Legal and Compliance team on a matrix basis
  • Demonstrate flexibility and sound judgement when dealing with organisational ambiguity
  • Own your own development through adopting a growth mind-set and being open and willing to continuously improve your legal and non-legal skills
  • Proactively seek opportunities to collaborate within and support the development of the Legal & Compliance function
  • Lead on functional activities across Legal & Compliance

How You'll Contribute

To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:


  • A relevant Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Masters of Laws (LLM) or equivalent
  • A licensed IP attorney in the UK, US or EU
  • Extensive legal PQE experience as a IP Lawyer within in house and/or practice environments 
  • Experience of multiparty party development agreements and grant funding agreements
  • Experience of enforcement of rights and disputes
  • Experience of patent prosecution
  • Experience of portfolio management 


  • A patent practitioner registered with the USPTO
  • In house experience gained from the manufacturing, engineering, technology or aerospace industries
  • People management experience
