Job Summary

GKN Aerospace is the world’s leading multi-technology tier 1 aerospace supplier. Our technologies are used in aircraft ranging from the most used single aisle aircraft and the largest passenger planes in the world to business jets and the world’s advanced 5th generation fighter aircraft. GKN’s new Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol is a £32m state of the art technology research and development facility which will act as a hub for world-class innovative technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. We are looking for a Senior Engineer with a background in power electronics and motor control to develop electrical drive hardware which will help shape the future of flight. You will be involved in the full development cycle of high-power, high-performance electrical drives for future aircraft propulsion. You will have the opportunity to contribute from requirements and specification, through to development and test definition, helping to prove and evolve novel technologies in a demanding, ground-breaking application.

You will be an integral member of a team that is embarking on a significant and challenging technology development project, which is a major stepping-stone towards achieving greener aviation thus helping protect our environment for future generations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work in conjunction with academic research partners, identify and investigate in detail the technical challenges which must be overcome to meet the project objectives
  • Transfer and translate research findings into practical design rules and sizing tools for power electronic converters
  • Develop analysis and simulation capabilities enabling GKN Aerospace to scale-up the solutions developed early in the project and bring them to a high Technology Readiness Level (TRL)
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for technical innovation and intellectual property (IP) development
  • Work with the systems architects, thermal engineers and simulation software engineers to ensure a holistic approach to developing the system requirements is followed
  • Derive technical requirements and specifications, then plan and execute their verification and validation
  • Define, develop and deliver electronic hardware and software to control power conversion in safety-critical, high-performance applications
  • Participate in in-depth analysis of test data and contribute to technical reports and presentations
     

How You'll Contribute


To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:

Essential:

  • Strong experience in electrical and electronic engineering, with a focus on power electronics for high power motor control
  • Experience of power device technologies and their characteristics, and awareness of converter topologies applicable to motor drive applications
  • Experience in designing high frequency analogue and digital circuitry from simulation to breadboard prototyping
  • Experience in simulation, modelling and data analysis using modern engineering toolsets (e.g. MATLAB/Simulink, SPICE, Siemens Simcenter, COMSOL etc.)

Desirable:

 

  • Experience in developing motor control software in embedded system or FPGA environment would be a desirable.
  • Experience in designing and testing power electronics hardware at any level from system down to PCB/device would be extremely valuable.
  • Experience in vehicle electrification (particularly if this comes from within the aerospace industry)
  • Experience with aerospace standards including ARP4754, ARP4761, DO254, DO-178, DO-297 and DO160
