Job Summary

GKN’s Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol is a £32m state of the art technology research and manufacturing process development facility which is a hub for world-class innovative technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. It includes a collaborative space for research and development with universities, the UK’s CATAPULT network and GKN Aerospace’s UK supply chain, to help strengthen aerospace technology and support the UK’s Industrial strategy.  

We are seeking to recruit a Research Engineer to join our growing team developing local expertise in cryogenic engineering. The successful candidate will provide engineering support to cryogenic systems in the areas of research, design, and test whilst managing cryogenic system projects both internally and externally through subcontractors.
 

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering analysis, modelling, and calculations in support of projects requiring cryogenic temperatures
  • Develop and use robust tools based on sound thermodynamic and mechanical principles for the design of cryogenic systems and equipment
  • Generate and maintain a database of cryogenic materials properties
  • Design and develop cryogenic enclosures and suspension systems and perform associated thermal analysis
  • Specify and supervise the design and manufacture of cryogenic equipment and components by suppliers and partners.
  • Participate in specification, installation, commissioning, and testing (including reporting) of cryogenic systems.
  • Develop and maintain Health, Safety and Environment standards for working with cryogenic fluids including liquid hydrogen. Maintain an awareness of relevant standards.
  • Support safety and process compliance activities

How You'll Contribute

To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:

Essential:

  • Degree in Engineering or Physics with completed modules in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and materials.
  • Experience in CAD and FEA
  • Practical experience in designing and running tests and experiments

Desirable:

  • Experience of designing or working with cryogenic systems
  • Experience of designing or working with high or ultra-high vacuum systems
  • Experience of CFD
