The Opportunity

GKN’s Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol is a £32m state of the art technology research and development facility which is a hub for world-class innovative technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. Based at the GTC, we are looking for a Mechanical/Thermal Research Engineer with electric propulsion experience to help shape the future of flight. You will be involved in the full development cycle of high-power, high-performance electric motor and drive equipped with innovative cooling technology. You will have the opportunity to contribute from requirements and specification, through to development and test definition, helping to prove and evolve novel technologies in a demanding, ground-breaking application.You will be an integral member of a team that is embarking on a significant and challenging technology development project; this five year project will be a major stepping-stone towards achieving greener aviation thus helping protect our environment for future generations.

How You'll Contribute

In this role, you will:
•    Work in conjunction with academic research partners, identify and investigate in detail the technical challenges which must be overcome to meet the project objectives.
•    Transfer and translate research findings into practical design of cryogenically cooled electric propulsion system for aircraft.
•    Develop analysis and simulation capabilities enabling GKN Aerospace to scale-up the solutions developed early in the project and bring them to a high Technology Readiness Level.
•    Identify and pursue opportunities for technical innovation and intellectual property (IP) development.
•    Work with the systems architects, cryogenic engineers, and system simulation engineers to ensure that a holistic approach to developing the system requirements is followed.
•    Derive technical requirements and specifications, then plan and execute their verification and validation.
•    Define, develop and deliver mechanical design in motor and drive system in safety-critical, high-performance applications.
•    Participate in in-depth analysis of test data and contribute to technical reports and presentations.

What You'll Bring

To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and expertise/ talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:

•    An excellent working knowledge and experience of mechanical design of high reliability and safety critical motors, motor controllers and drive systems and all associated packaging and enclosures.
•    Experience in the use of Finite Element Modelling in relation to the dynamics of rotating machinery, structural analysis, fatigue/fracture, shock/impact, etc.
•    Strong understanding of thermal modelling of electric motor, drive, as well as associated systems.
•    Ability to perform thermodynamic heat transfer calculations and proficient in the theory of thermodynamics, as well as the experience to take systematic approach to conduct 1D and 3D simulation using modern CAE tools, such as: Amesim, Simulink, MotorCAD, Star CCM+ 
•    Proficient user of CAD modelling tools, with demonstrable knowledge of GD&T and DFM . Catia V5 would be an advantage.
•    Demonstrable knowledge of design life cycles from concept to production including DFM, liaising with manufacturing suppliers on cost down activities and processes, GD&T, DFMEAs and reliability in design.
•    Experience in vehicle electrification is highly desirable, particularly if this comes from within the aerospace industry. 
•    Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal format.
•    Familiarity with aerospace standards including ARP4754, ARP4761, DO254, DO-178, DO-297 and DO160 would be beneficial but is not essential.
