The Opportunity

Based at our state-of-the-art research centre - the UK Global Technology Centre - in Bristol, we are looking for three Research Engineers to be responsible for the development of Industry 4.0 technologies: 

  • We are seeking two Research Engineers to focus on Asset Connectivity & Smart Devices. 
  • We are seeking one Research Engineer to focus on Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence 

All three roles will focus on the management, development and demonstration of relevant technology projects up to TRL 6. This includes building requirements, knowledge base, technology selection, and demonstration. Then providing the technology support/expertise to the business during the implementation phase across all programmes/sites within the Civil Airframe business line (Horizon 1 Technology). Working within the Horizon 1 technology team you will report directly to the work stream leader and work closely with the Industry 4.0 Chief Technologist. These roles will integrate with the other technology insertion areas within Horizon 1, such as Asset Connectivity and Smart Devices, Data Analytics, Visualisation, Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Digital Supply Chain Management and Automation.

How You'll Contribute

In these roles, you will: 

  • Manage the development of technology projects within the relevant work stream.
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders ensuring support for the projects across the business.
  • Specific, tasks for the roles would include:
    • Provide technical expertise throughout the duration of projects.
    • Collect and integrate a robust set of business/technology requirements for the specific technology project.
    • Develop the case for technology introduction for the point of value and risk, finding agreement with the business in line with the TRL process.
    • Produce and own the production of all supporting project documentation (presentations, for technology communication and reporting, technology development plans, test definitions, technical reports, equipment specifications, and CapEx case).
  • Contribute to the development and the upkeep of a technology database that will be used to capture, communicate and evaluate the value and risk of current technologies available internally and externally to GKN.
  • Support building relationships within the current transnational Civil Airframe eco system and technology supply chain.
  • Support challenging internal & supplier costs, whilst working to a tight budget.
  • Ensure the programme impact and risk is vetted using the TRA process, and project reviews.
     

What You'll Bring

To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and expertise/ talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:

  • Good technical understanding across a broad range of aerospace technologies.
  • Understanding of GKN key products and areas where technology can offer operational improvements.
  • Sound understanding of the TRL process.
  • Previous experience in project management.
  • Knowledge about the businesses, products and sensitivities of collaborative partners.
  • Good understanding of composite and metallic aircraft structures and manufacturing techniques.
  • Industrial connectivity & I4.0 device knowledge desirable (Asset Connectivity & Smart Devices roles).
  • Data Science, Machine Learning, Neural Networks knowledge desirable (Data Analytics & Artificial Intelligence role).

Qualifications
•    A relevant, accredited engineering degree or experience of demonstrable equivalence e.g. BEng or higher apprenticeship.
•    Formal project management qualification from a recognised awarding body e.g. APM or Prince2 desirable.
