Our Western Approach site is an International Centre of Excellence in composite wing structure design and production, manufacturing composite wing spars and Fixed Trailing Edge assemblies for the Airbus A350 & A400M.
About the Apprenticeship
Our Production Apprenticeship Scheme is a 4-year program. We offer two separate Apprenticeships; descriptions of which are below. Please note; you need to be comfortable with working at height or in confined spaces as required.
Fitter- Fitters put together components & sub-assemblies that go into the aircraft on our customers’ final assembly lines. Fitters work to manufacturing & engineering instructions/drawings & will use skills including: Drilling, reaming & countersinking; Riveting & bolting; Using automated/robotic drilling equipment; Functional testing of mechanical systems
Machinist- Our Integrated Machining Facility at Western Approach focuses on the manufacture of composite wing spars. Skills/knowledge developed will include: Operating 3, 4 & 5 axis CNC Milling machine tools; Operating co-ordinate measuring machines (CMM), conventional & digital measuring equipment; Understanding processes, procedures & engineering drawings
Apprentice Programme Structure
Year 1: The majority of your first year will be working offsite at college completing your foundation training. Towards the end of the first year, you’ll complete a return to site induction followed by onsite training
Years 2 & 3: You will undertake Business Familiarisation rotation placements. During your placements, you will document work that you complete & review this regularly with your GKN training advisor
Year 4: You’ll be assigned to your final department. Your practical observation assessments will be completed, alongside the underpinning knowledge questions. You’ll also complete the End Point Assessment (EPA)

- To observe the company’s terms & conditions of employment
- In both work & training, be diligent, punctual & attend courses, keep records & achieve the training objectives
- To behave in a responsible manner & in accordance with the requirements of Health & Safety legislation
- To promote the company’s name & image with respect & diplomacy
- To successfully complete all activities documented in the Apprentice Training Agreement

- Maths: 4 - 9
- English: 4 - 9
- Science/engineering related subject: 4 - 9
