Job Summary

GKN’s Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol is a £32m state of the art technology research and manufacturing process development facility which is a hub for world-class innovative technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. It includes a collaborative space for research and development with universities, the UK’s CATAPULT network and GKN Aerospace’s UK supply chain, to help strengthen aerospace technology and support the UK’s Industrial strategy. We are seeking to recruit a Principal Research Engineer – Cryogenic Hydrogen Installations to join our growing team, responsible for the development of hydrogen fuel system and mechanical systems installation (MSI). This will include the development of design principles for cryogenic hydrogen mechanical system installations for fuel system. You will develop both liquid and gaseous hydrogen fuel system connection principles for hydrogen equipment applicable to metallic and composite pipes.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop cryogenic and non-cryogenic hydrogen piping installation concepts compliant to the associated safety, certification and maturity requirements ensuring intellectual property is recorded and protected 
  • Develop concepts for sensing, monitoring and other functional elements of the fuel systems
  • Define and develop requirements, and turn them into a feasible designs by proposing solutions, systems and component definition using ARP4754 methodology. 
  • Ensure development and evolution of system requirements through the design into a validated physical product
  • Define validation plans and ensure compliance through analysis, simulation and/or test (e.g. DO-160) as appropriate
  • Development of the Health, Safety and Environment standards within the project for the handling of cryogenic fluids and hydrogen
  • Maintain awareness of current standards under development for transportation liquid hydrogen fuel systems

Essential:

  • Degree in Engineering or Physics 
  • Experience of fluid mechanical systems installation development
  • Experience of developing cryogenic hydrogen systems.
  • Experience of hydrogen safety assessment and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience with material properties at cryogenic temperatures 
  • Experience of product development lifecycle for cryogenic equipment 
  • Experience in developing design standards for fluid systems
  • Experience in experimental techniques for cryogenic systems  
  • Experience of resolution of manufacturing or in service issues

Desirable:

  • Experience in aerospace mechanical systems installations development
  • Experience of Requirements Based Engineering (RBE) and proficiency in RBE tools, e.g. DOORs. 
  • An active member of one or more international standardisation committees for aerospace.
