Our Global Technology Centre

Our new Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol is a £32m state of the art technology research and development facility. It acts as a hub for world-class innovative technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. It offers a collaborative space for research and development with universities, the UK’s CATAPULT network and GKN Aerospace’s UK supply chain, to help strengthen aerospace technology and support the UK’s Industrial strategy.

Job Summary


For the third and consecutive year we have a number of exciting internship opportunities based at our Global Technology Centre.  Fuel your passion in making things fly by joining us at the cutting edge of the aviation industry and discover the future possibilities that await you.

In this role you will support the team in developing and maturing Powder Bed Additive Manufacturing technologies for Aero-Engine and Space Product applications. This is potentially a once in a lifetime opportunity to actually be a rocket scientist!


This placement is most suited to someone after a varied assignment who is a self-starter, can work autonomously


About The Project


Working on this project will give you the opportunity to:


  • Draw on your broad foundational knowledge of Engineering and Material Science, applying this knowledge on a range of research activities.
  • Develop product and test specimen designs, undertake AM build file preparation and simulation, and ultimately support product manufacture.
  • Play an active hands on role in supporting practical lab work and investigations to verify material quality through optical and scanning electron microscopy.
  • Work alongside some of the UK’s leading minds in Additive Manufacturing, and also have the chance to work collaboratively with other GKN teams working on additive manufacturing accords Europe


Additionally this role has the potential to cover a wide range of responsibilities, exploring all things from design and simulation, to factory design, material characterisation and the development of software tools for data analysis.

Job Qualifications


In order to be considered for this role you will need to be studying towards a degree, or have completed your studies in one of the following subjects:


  • Must be studying an undergraduate degree in Aerospace engineering, Mechanical engineering, or Material Science.


In addition you will also bring with you the following: 


  • An enthusiasm for additive manufacture linked with an interest in aerospace or space science
  • Experience with CAD packages (CATIX, Siemens NX, Fusion 360, SolidWorks…)
  • Practical hands on manufacturing experience 
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a diverse team
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English, coupled with good IT skills
  • Experience with coding and machine learning desirable, although not essential
