Job Summary

GKN Aerospace Filton specialises in the design and manufacture of large complex structural wing assemblies, detailed metallic components and wing systems for a combination of both civil and military aircraft. Our new Multi-skilled Maintenance Engineer (Night Shift) will join a friendly team who work effectively and efficiently on machine tool/plant breakdown and repairs. They handle the calibration, planned scheduled maintenance and all associated tasks on both conventional and CNC machine tools and plant. 

Nightshift premium + overtime. This is a permanent role, hours of work approx 43. The shift will be a 7 day fortnight over the nightshift, to work 2 Saturdays per month on a 17 week rotation: employee will work either Sunday, Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, Thursday, Friday night, with 2 Saturday shifts each month. Shift patterns not guaranteed.

Job Responsibilities

They will maintain and diagnose faults on:

  • Machine Tools/Plant: Tool axes including linear guides / rails, motors, gearboxes, lead screws, bearings
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems including counter balance circuits, hydraulic clamping, hydraulic motors, rams, cylinders
  • Machine alignments: Checking and correction of machine alignments, by clocking bars, datum holes and slip gauges, laser alignments, ball bar tests
  • Correction by changing parameters in CNC. control, testing with machine cuts/machine cycles
  • Plant: Swarf conveyors, coolant systems, centrifuges, cranes, presses, ovens, pipe benders etc
  • Electrical appreciation: Knowledge of machine tools electrically including machine parameters diagnostics and calibration

Other Duties:

  • Cleaning, driving, rigging, slinging & assisting with out of trade activity
  • Work with sub contractors when required
  • Demonstrate improvements to plant reliability and availability
  • Inputting of job records using electronic data collection (CONCEPT)
  • Champion ‘Export Control’ compliance activities, ensuring you and where applicable, members of your team, adhere to the site ‘Technology Control Plan (TCP)’, guaranteeing compliance with Export Control Regulations, controls, training and systems.
  • Compliance with all risk assessments and company Environment, Health & Safety Procedures relevant to all work activities.  Reporting of all incidents, accidents and near misses as per the company’s procedure and implementation of identified corrective actions.  Maintain good standards of housekeeping in designated work area(s)

Job Qualifications

  • Must have a technician level qualification (HNC or City & Guilds Part 3) and post apprenticeship experience in the maintenance of machine tools and factory plant
  • Understanding of Export Control and regulatory requirements
  • Self-motivated, working without direct supervision
  • Physically able to bend in and out of machines
