The Opportunity

GKN Aerospace Filton specialises in the design and manufacture of large complex structural wing assemblies, detailed metallic components and wing systems for a combination of both civil and military aircraft. We are looking for Radiographers to join our Test Department, where we provide a Non Destructive Test (NDT) service to the Manufacturing and Design & Engineering functions of the business. Methods used are Radiographic testing and Digital Radiographic testing (RT & DRT). You will be operating a radiographic facility unsupervised that performs Radiography Testing on various types of aircraft, and non-aircraft, materials, components and structures. A fundamental aspect of the role is certifying product meets specified criteria. Typical examples of products are:-

•    Thin Walled Aluminium fabrications.
•    Titanium and stainless Steel ducting.
•    Aerospace components and structures

36 hours per week worked on a 2 week rotation: Week 1: 7am-7pm Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday  Week 2: Wednesday, Thursday

Salary upwards from £30,000 + shift allowance

How You'll Contribute

This role offers you the opportunity to learn new skills, to work with new technologies in a changing environment where you will support our manufacturing engineers to really help us make things fly. In this role, you will:

  • Create Radiography Testing (RT) & Digital Radiographic Testing Instructions as required
  • Perform RT & DRT Inspections
  • Provide reports on Non-Destructive Testing matters as required
  • Communicate with customers and suppliers as required
  • Comply with all Health & Safety requirements
  • Ensure Radiation Safety.     
  • Supervise Level 1 and RT trainees as applicable
  • Ensure all relevant process control checks are carried out

What You'll Bring

Experienced within aerospace engineering, you will be: 

•    Qualified to EN4179 Level 2 Aerospace DRT & RT Combined (ideally, but full training will be provided)
•    Knowledgeable of material specifications and their associated testing criterion.
•    Capable of producing concise reports on test results.
•    Conversant with Microsoft Office IT Processes.
•    Verbally proficient to discuss test results with all levels of staff.
•    Classified as a Radiation Worker in accordance with IRR 2017 (training will be provided).
•    Trained Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) training will be provided
Regardless of qualification status, successful candidates will be required to undertake and pass local specific and practical examinations in accordance with GKN Work Instruction.
