Job Summary

A position has arisen for a Research Specialist (AM Design Methods) - AM Powder Bed in the UK GTC Additive Manufacturing Powder Bed team.  The Research Specialist shall draw on their engineering background in Design, and knowledge of powder bed manufacturing, to support a variety of technology development activities in the TRL 1-6 range, specifically focused towards aero engine applications. Design for additive manufacturing is an exciting field with unique challenges and opportunities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop AM design methods and tools (For example: Topology optimisation, Generative Design, Foams & Lattice Programmes) within industrial and research collaborations. 
  •  Lead TRL activities for the above AM Design Methods. 
  •  Apply advanced AM Design methods into product development activities, supporting both process- and product-based TRL maturation.
  •  Interface with the Design eco-system, build relationships and seek to guide external technical development activities. 
  •  Integrate design methods into the wider AM process flow of simulation, design for additive and nesting.
  •  Shall demonstrate a commitment to innovation and technical quality in their specialist field - leading to high quality Technology Readiness Level gates
  •  Shall drive maturity of technologies in their specialist field, and undertake technical problem solving in their specialist field, including support with operational issues from time to time
  •  Shall develop and maintain long-term ecosystem & academia relationships in their specialist field for the benefit of the projects, aligned with direction from the Chief Technologist(s)
  •  Shall coach colleagues and upcoming talent in their specialist field, and may be required to supervise apprentices/students/graduates.
  •  Shall contribute to the development of GKN as a 'Great Place to Work', aligned with the core principles - safe, innovative, open & honest, care & respect, and ownership

Job Qualifications

 Proven track record in design using CATIA and associated PLM packages
 Good experience of advanced surface modelling in CAD
 Aero engine design experience
 A good understanding of Additive Manufacturing principles and post processing requirements
 A good understanding of design considerations for aero engine materials, specifically Titanium and nickel alloys.
 Understanding of broader manufacturing methods within the aerospace industry
 Clear, articulate communication skills including good written English.
 Working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
 Confidence in interacting across all levels of the business.
 Experience in the following software applications Magic’s, inspire/evolve, Polyworks, Simufact (desirable)

 Appreciation stress analysis and the of the use of FEA tools
 Experience of working within an R&D environment with a focus on delivery to industry

Qualifications Required: 
 Degree-qualified (or equivalent i.e technical apprenticeship) Design Engineer
 Aerospace industry experience
