Job Summary

Our new Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol is a £32m state of the art technology research and development facility. It acts as a hub for world-class innovative technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. It offers a collaborative space for research and development with universities, the UK’s CATAPULT network and GKN Aerospace’s UK supply chain, to help strengthen aerospace technology and support the UK’s Industrial strategy. 

What You'll Be Doing

As an Intern in Additive Manufacturing, specifically directed energy deposition (DED), you will support the wider team in our continued development and industrial implementation of GKN Aerospace proprietary additive technology, Laser Metal Deposition by wire (LMDw).  We are focused on long term use for large (>1m), critical aerostructure applications, mainly using titanium alloys. 

 

In this role you will draw on your broad foundational knowledge of Engineering and Material Science, applying this knowledge on a range of research activities. This role has the potential to cover a wide range of responsibilities, including aspects such as material characterization, test campaign definition, data analysis, component design, process simulation, industrial system modifications, software development and/or transitioning new technology to an aerospace production state.  This placement is most suited to someone looking for a varied placement who is a self-starter, and who can work autonomously.

 

You will work alongside some of the UK’s leading minds in Additive Manufacturing, while having the chance to collaborate with other GKN Aerospace teams developing this technology across the globe.

What You'll Bring

Essential

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Must be studying towards an undergraduate degree in any Engineering discipline or Material Science
  • An enthusiasm for additive manufacturing linked with an interest in aerospace
  • Eager to learn new technical skillsets, both software and hardware
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a diverse team
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English, coupled with good IT skills
  • Experience with CAD packages (CATIA, Siemens NX, Fusion 360, SolidWorks)

 

Desirable

  • Experience with coding (C++, python) and machine learning
  • Practical hands-on manufacturing experience
