Sitting within our Defence Airframes business line at our Portsmouth manufacturing plant you’ll do just that. Established in 1990, it is one of our newer locations and with a workforce of around 200 employees. 

The site is a leading technology provider for the aerospace, marine and military markets. We supply an extensive range of specialist fuel tanks and flotation systems, as well as engineering expertise and support for fixed and rotary wing aircrafts, land vehicles, missiles, UAVs, torpedoes and marine vessels.
Our customer base includes Airbus, BAE Systems, Bell, Boeing, General Automics, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Jaguar Land Rover, Rolls Royce, Sikorsky, Saab, MOD.

Job Summary

The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will be based at our Portsmouth site with occasional travel to our other sites and customers, there is flexibility to work from home for up to 2 days per week, dependent on the needs of the business. The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will report directly to the Director, Manufacturing Engineering Serial Production – Defence Europe and will lead projects to resolve key manufacturing and process control issues to ensure improvements in product quality and process capability. The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will support the selection of projects through their analysis and understanding of a sites’ key issues and opportunities and will then manage the projects, using a data driven, structured problem solving approach and good project management skills, through to demonstrated improvement.  

Job Responsibilities

  • Exemplify a safety-first mind-set and ensuring compliance with the GKN Aerospace Health, Safety and Environmental policies and standards
  • Develop positive relationships with site teams and other stakeholders and proactively support identification and resolution of key site issues with product quality and process capability  
  • Use data to identify opportunities to improve quality, cost or process capability on key priority products or processes 
  • Define, plan and project manage agreed improvement projects to achieve agreed benefits 
  • Collaborate with site Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering, Quality & Operations teams in the understanding of opportunities, collection of data and execution of projects 
  • Effectively utilise industry tools and frameworks such as DAMIC, Six Sigma, Zero Defects Manufacturing tools to deliver improvements 
  • Collaborate with other Senior manufacturing Engineers based at the other Defence Europe sites

Job Qualifications


To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:



  • Significant experience gained from a Manufacturing Engineer role within a manufacturing environment
  • Green Belt Six Sigma qualification
  • Project Management experience (typical project duration is of 3+ months from concept to delivering benefits)
  • Experience of driving process improvement
  • Experience of statistical analysis and process control
  • Experience in using data to look for, justify and validate improvements
  • Intermediate competency with Microsoft software including Word, Excel and Outlook



  • A relevant Engineering BEng or equivalent
  • Aerospace, Pharmaceutical or Automotive manufacturing experience
  • Black Belt Six Sigma qualification
  • Aerospace manufacturing experience
