Job Summary

The Senior Legal Counsel will be based at Blythe Valley in Solihull supporting our global functions and Engines business line whilst reporting to the Head of Legal - Engines, the incumbent will travel to Sweden and internationally on an annual basis to attend conferences and team meetings and there is flexibility to work from home for up to 3 days per week dependent on the needs of the business. The Senior Legal Counsel will provide technically excellent and timely legal advice and business partnering on a wide range of legal and compliance issues to support the Engines business line as required and the Global Functions (Finance, IT, HR, Legal and Compliance) with responsibility for Legal & Compliance Budget management, Functional and Engagement Plan management, Compliance Framework training management, keeping the relevant compliance policies up to date and embedded and Enterprise level indirect procurement initiatives. The role will also involve the identification and proactive management of legal and compliance risk. 

Established in 2019, Blythe Valley hosts GKN Aerospace’s Global Functions which provide support to all of our employees, across a range of activities including; HR, IT, Finance, HSE, Corporate Governance, Purchasing, Supply Chain, Global Communications and Legal. We partner with the world’s major aircraft and Original Equipment manufacturers including; Airbus, Astronics, Aviation Partners Boeing, BAE Systems, Bell Helicopters, Boeing, Bombardier Aerospace, Cessna, Cobham, Dassault, General Automics, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Honeywell, Jaguar Land Rover, Leonardo, Lockheed Martin, MOD, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls Royce, Sikorsky, Saab, Textron, Triumph. Blythe Valley is home to 50+ employees and onsite/local facilities include Break out spaces, communal café, showers, Java Lounge coffee house, day care nursery, health club, cycle and motorcycle covered parking and vehicle electric charging stations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain and coordinate the Legal & Compliance Functional plan, the Legal & Compliance Engagement plan, the Legal & Compliance Budget,  Compliance Framework training, training within the Legal & Compliance Function, keeping the relevant compliance policies up to date and embedded, reporting (internal and external) including coordinating the monthly reporting for the GC and general functional activities including the Legal & Compliance SharePoint and the Delegation of Authority for the Legal & Compliance Function
  • Manage contentious matters with both Engines customers and suppliers 
  • Provide other support to the Engines Business Line as required
  • Draft, review and negotiate complex indirect global supplier contracts
  • Support the indirect Procurement and Supply Chain teams on supplier issues 
  • Manage regulatory and compliance issues including in relation to GKN Aerospace’s corporate compliance programme
  • Support the Global Functions with respect to the day-to-day legal requirements together with any material or project level assistance they may need 
  • Act as principal Legal contact point for the Global Functions IT, HR and Finance and indirect Procurement managing key stakeholder relationships designated to you
  • Focus on and prioritise resource and effort around key business goals 
  • Identify gaps and shortcomings in procedures and knowledge and subsequent risks to the business taking ownership of resolutions
  • Supervise and monitor work carried out by more junior members of the team to ensure quality and timely delivery ensuring the accurate information is shared and delegated
  • Manage and supervise individuals as required 
  • Support M&A, Employment, Product safety/HSE, Environmental, Real estate, Data protection, Investigations and Company secretarial matters 
  • Work frequently with other members of the Legal and Compliance team or broader GKN Aerospace organisation on a matrix basis
  • Demonstrated a team ethos, flexibility and sound judgement when dealing with organisational ambiguity 
  • Accountability for owning your own development to continuously improve your legal and non-legal skills 
  • Proactively seek opportunities to collaborate within and support the development of the Legal & Compliance function 
  • Take the lead on functional activities across Legal & Compliance

How You'll Contribute

  • A Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) or equivalent 
  • Extensive PQE legal counsel experience gained from a top tier law firm or an in-house environment
  • Experience of driving and delivering process improvement
  • Experience of delivering compliance framework training
  • Experience of budget management
  • Experience of internal and external monthly reporting
  • Experience of working with and influencing internal and external senior stakeholders
  • Experience of change management 


  • A Master of Laws Degree (LLM) or equivalent 
  • Manufacturing or Aerospace industry experience
  • Experience of supporting global procurement projects 
  • Experience of negotiating new contracts
  • Experience of supplier dispute resolution
  • Experience of training and upskilling lawyers and wider business functions
