Job Summary

As a Senior Research Engineer, you will draw on your specialist knowledge, or on your 
diverse engineering background and product/technology knowledge, to ensure innovative 
and high quality research and development in the TRL1-6 range, in concept development, 
demonstrator projects and in insertion projects. You have a record of accomplishment of 
innovation, leading technical work (including budgeting, schedule and risk management), 
and are developing a professional network in your field. Your good communication skills 
enable you engage with confidence, a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders, 
including non-specialists.

Job Responsibilities

You develop an understanding of the strategic direction of our target products and key technology areas and you will contribute to the development of the 
Technology Strategy for those products, reconciling strategic input from multiple specialist areas. 
 You have developed an understanding of the strategic direction of your specialist field inside and outside of GKN, and you will contribute to Technology Strategy within your specialist field, supporting generation of roadmaps associated with your specialist field. 
 You will support robust forward planning of technical work. 
 You will be responsible of and/or contribute to Technology Development Plans and Technology Business Cases related to your specialist field or product/technology area. 
 You will demonstrate a commitment to innovation and technical quality in your specialist field - leading to high quality Technology Readiness Level gates, Notional Type Designs and/or Design Reviews. 
 You will ensure all planning documentation in your responsibility are updated regularly and is accurate, and is delivered on time. You may also have schedule accountability for your project(s) . You will support or lead any necessary 'hands on' development test work and 
development trials that are required to meet your project and/or functional 
delivery objectives. 
 You will be responsible for originating and issuing high quality and detailed technical documentation. 
 You will coach colleagues and upcoming talent in your specialist field. Expect to supervise graduate students / Masters / PhD theses. 
 You will drive maturity of technologies in your specialist field, and undertake technical problem solving in your specialist field, including support with operational issues from time to time. 
 You should have, and you will continue to develop and maintain long-term ecosystem & academia relationships in your specialist field for the benefit of the projects, aligned with the company strategy and direction from the Chief Technologist(s). 
 You will contribute to new technology research project applications. You will ensure adherence to environmental health and safety (EHS) policies and procedures for your activities, and you will contribute to a proactive EHS culture in the wider team.

Job Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in engineering relevant to the area of work, or experience of demonstrable equivalence. 
Skills and experience required for the role are: 
 12+ years of analysis and simulation experience with excellent knowledge of finite element analysis, working in the development of technology and/or products for 
commercial jet engines or similar.  
 Proven ability to mentor, guide and coach the team Experience leading multidisciplinary teams 

Ability of balancing the input from different engineering disciplines to reach the 
best compromise solutions 
Understanding and experience of the different steps of the Product development 
cycle and technology development for aero engines 
Working experience & strong technical Background in Design of aero engine 
components with all the relevant tools knowledge such as ANSYS & APDL 
Working knowledge of fatigue calculations and relevant tools such as NASGRO  
Excellent knowledge of programming with Python is desirable 
General engineering knowledge of design for metallic materials, composites materials and manufacturing processes including additive. 
Experience in technology development, knowledge of TRL-scale and process. 
Knowledge of Systems Level Product Functions and Requirement Modelling  
Experience in Concept Developments and leading NPI design projects and knowledge of demonstrator/prototype development process. 
You have good communication skills, the ability to create effective networks and can take on a technical responsibility role
