Advanced Technical Apprentice - MEQ

An exciting opportunity for for an Advanced Technical (Manufacturing, Engineering and Quality) Apprentice has become available at our world-class Aerospace manufacturing facility in East Cowes, on the Isle of Wight.

Our Manufacturing Engineering Apprenticeship is a 4-year programme & would provide development & training across a wide range of Engineering skills & processes. You will be involved in delivering opportunities, solutions & benefits to the GKN Operational site based on data driven analysis & the ability to understand complex situations. You will need to be both Adaptable & Flexible.

Automation and Programming - This role will provide the necessary expertise to introduce new Technologies & Automation. Examples include:

  • Technology Insertion – Manufacturing Engineers Aid in the development of new technologies to assist Aerospace production processes, predominately within our Composite manufacture but to include Assembly integration.
  • Programming of Robots and Cobots ~ this will become a major skill requirement for GKN in the near future, implementing to improve manufacturing production and efficiency.

Manufacturing Engineering Technical Support - This role provides technical governance, support & expertise for all areas of the site’s Operational activities & Engineering functions. Achieved via:

  • Analysis tools
  • Creation of Manufacturing Build Instructions
  • Definition of Tooling requirements
  • Continuous improvement solutions
  • Product & Process development through innovation and research

Metrology Engineer - This role involves the validation of Aircraft components and Tools to ensure that they meet the required standard through the interrogation of CATIA based engineering and the creation of 3D measurement programs. The role will develop expertise in the use of

  • Co-ordinate Measurement machines (CMM)
  • Laser trackers
  • Laser scanners
  • Photogrammetry

Quality Engineer - This role involves providing the controls and governance for all Product and Processes that are produced and used within the business. The role will develop expertise around:

  • Quality planning
  • Use of quality tools & techniques
  • Development of our Quality Management System
  • Industry regulators (e.g.- Civil Aviation Authority)
  • Requirement compliance

Tooling Engineer - This role will develop skills to enable the design of new Tooling associated with the manufacture of complex Components and assemblies using CATIA software. The role will develop expertise around:

  • 3D Modeling
  • Tool Design
  • Engineering Tolerance
  • Requirement compliance

Throughout the Apprenticeship programme at our Cowes site, you will be expected to have a particular interest and passion in automated technologies, including robot, Cobot programing and implementation.

Year 1:  The majority of your first year will be working offsite at college. Towards the end of the first year, you will undertake a return to site induction followed by onsite GKN training.

Years 2 & 3:  You will undertake Business Familiarisation rotation placements within your occupational role area. During these years the work that you carry out within placement production areas will be recorded in the form of logbook entries. This logbook is reviewed monthly with your GKN training advisor.

Year 4:  You will continue and complete your Level 4 Technical Certificate and continue training in your final target department where you will continue and complete your Level 3 Competence Qualification as well as completion of your End Point Assessment.

Qualifications - You must have at least five GCSE’s including:

Maths A* - B   (9 - 6 New Grading)

English A* - C (9 – 4 New Grading)

Science A* - C (9 – 4 New Grading)  

Plus two more A* - C (9 – 4 New Grading)

If you live outside the EU you will need a UK work permit before you can start an apprenticeship.
