Advanced Estimating Engineering Apprentice

Our Estimating engineering Apprenticeship is a 4-year programme, which can lead onto a role within GKN Cowes Estimating department. Estimating Engineers predominately work as part of a cross-functional bid team incorporating many areas of the business & report functionally to the Head of Commercial/Head of Bids & Proposals. Following the defined bid process Estimators will support the bid function by generating an estimate for new products to GKN ASEA. 

Estimating engineers need to have an analytical approach, as they will be involved in problem solving, cross-functional communication & decision making.

The role will support all costing activities including bidding, design to cost, Contract Amendments, target costing, spares pricing, and supporting contract negotiations with Customers and Suppliers within agreed timescales and programmes. 

Key skills you will attain include the ability to read drawings, interpret CATIA datasets, create and understand Bills of Material. Develop a broad understanding of the Companies manufacturing processes & products at Cowes & potentially other sites within GKN ASEA group.

Over time you will construct, test and effectively use estimating tools including manufacturing and tooling cost models (predominately Excel based). You will receive training to understand the commercial requirements and accurately reflect this to build up the cost estimate.

You will need to have sound MS Excel skills and a good general knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of tools including MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Project. The candidate will follow Level 3 BTec and HNC in Engineering, Commercial and Costing qualifications depending on experience and necessity.

Apprentice Programme Structure

*Currently, throughout the Apprenticeship programme for the Cowes site, you will be expected to have a particular interest and passion in automated technologies including robot and Cobot programing and implementation.

Year 1:  Some of your first year will be working offsite at college. Later during the first year, you will undertake a return to site induction followed by onsite GKN training and experience in a manufacturing environment to understand the product mix currently on site.

Years 2 & 3:  You will undertake Business familiarisation placements within your occupational role area. During these years the work that you carry out within placement production areas will be recorded in the form of logbook entries. This logbook is reviewed monthly with your GKN training advisor. A long term placement will be in the Commercial and predominantly Estimating function to gain a full understanding of the role.

Year 4:  You will continue and complete your qualifications and continue training in your final target department as an estimating engineer.

Qualifications - You must have at least five GCSE’s

  • Maths A* - B   (9 - 6 New Grading)
  • English A* - C (9 – 4 New Grading)
  • Science A* - C (9 – 4 New Grading)  
  • Plus two more A* - C (9 – 4 New Grading)

If you live outside the EU you will need a UK work permit before you can start an apprenticeship.
