Advanced Electrics Engineering Apprentice

An exciting opportunity for for an Advanced Electrics Engineering Apprentice has become available at our world-class Aerospace manufacturing facility in East Cowes, on the Isle of Wight.

Our Electronics & Electrical Maintenance Apprenticeship is a 4-year programme, which can lead onto one of the following areas of technical expertise:

  • Electrical systems test engineer:  To fault find legacy equipment and install new equipment including calibration prior to Set To Work  and to test and develop electrical systems products in accordance with GKN internal policy, procedures, Work Instructions, customer and regulatory requirements
  • Maintenance Electrician: you will be trained to Fault find on all types of production equipment, to provide support service to all key plant and site installation work which supports the company’s production activities and to be support in various electrical repairs, installations and PATS testing.

Currently, throughout the Apprenticeship programme for the Cowes site, you will be expected to have a particular interest and passion in automated technologies including robot and Cobot programing and implementation.

Year 1:  Some of your first year will be working offsite at college. Later during the first year, you will undertake a return to site induction followed by onsite GKN training and experience in a manufacturing environment to understand the facilities, plant, equipment and sites.

Years 2 & 3:  You will undertake Business Familiarisation rotation placements within your occupational role area. During these years the work that you carry out within placement areas will be recorded in the form of logbook entries. This logbook is reviewed monthly with your GKN training advisor. A long term placement will be in the Facilities and Customer support electrical function to gain a full understanding the role.

Year 4:  You will continue and complete your qualifications and continue training in your final target department as an electronic systems and maintenance employee.

  • In both work and training, to be diligent and punctual and attend courses, keep records and take tests to be determined by the company in order to achieve the training objectives and quality gates

  • To promote the company’s name and image with respect and diplomacy.
  • To successfully complete all activities documented in the Apprentice Training Agreement.

Qualifications - You must have at least five GCSE’s

Maths A* - B   (9 - 6 New Grading)

English A* - C (9 – 4 New Grading)

Science A* - C (9 – 4 New Grading)  

Plus two more A* - C (9 – 4 New Grading)

If you live outside the EU you will need a UK work permit before you can start an apprenticeship.
